Wisdom (245): One group worshiped Allah out of desire for reward, this is the worship of the traders and one group worshiped Him out of fear, and this is the worship of slaves and one group worshiped Him out of gratitude, this is the worship of the free.
This wisdom reflects the deep insight of Imam Ali (a.s.). It suggests that the spiritual and moral state of a person is influenced by their material condition. As one's capacity—resources and power—increases, the intensity of their desires diminishes. This implies that when individuals succeed in achieving their goals, they find less need for worldly possessions and desires.
Historically, this wisdom resonates with the period when Imam Ali (a.s.) aimed to promote ethical and spiritual teachings among different strata of Islamic society. It highlights that true success lies not merely in material wealth but in spiritual tranquility and gratitude.
This wisdom teaches us that as we achieve success in life, we should distance ourselves from worldly desires and appreciate those things that provide us with spiritual peace. It also emphasizes the aspect of gratitude, as we should acknowledge Allah's blessings when our capacities are enhanced.
Practically, we should understand that along with success and prosperity in life, our spiritual condition is equally important. We must strive to control our desires and focus on those aspects that bring us true happiness.
