Wisdom (411): Do not let the sharpness of your tongue be directed against the One who taught you to speak, and do not display eloquence of speech against the One who guided you to the right path.
This wisdom from Imam Ali (peace be upon him) emphasizes the significance of language and the etiquette of its use. It reflects a time when the Islamic society was evolving, and various ideas and thoughts were being exchanged. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) teaches his followers how to use their tongue wisely.
The wisdom contains two critical points: first, one should not use the sharpness of their tongue against the One who taught them to speak, referring to Allah, who grants knowledge, wisdom, and eloquence. Second, one should not showcase their eloquence against those who guide them to the right path. This reflects a sense of respect and gratitude towards one's mentors and guides.
A vital moral lesson here is that we should exercise caution in our speech and always consider against whom we are speaking. This not only restrains the sharpness of our tongues but also teaches us to respect our teachers and leaders.
Practically, this wisdom encourages us to maintain balance in our conversations. We should adopt a gentle tone in our discourse and be mindful of the dignity and respect of others. This advice is timeless and relevant in every era.
