Detailed Explanation — Wisdom (439): For the benefit of the servants, Allah has reserved some blessings for some of the servants of God. Therefore, as long as they continue to give, Allah keeps these blessings in their hands and when they withhold these blessings, Allah takes them away from them and transfers them to others.

In Wisdom (439), Imam Ali (peace be upon him) presents a comprehensive definition of asceticism (Zuhd) based on two phrases from the Quran. These verses teach us not to grieve over what has slipped away from us and not to boast about what Allah has granted us. This perspective directs us towards the transient nature of worldly possessions and their ultimate reality.

Historically, this wisdom was articulated during a time when Imam Ali (peace be upon him) sought to clarify the significance of asceticism in Islamic society. Zuhd is not merely about renouncing worldly possessions but understanding their nature and not being overly attached to them. This wisdom delineates two dimensions of Zuhd: first, that a person should not lament over past losses, and second, that one should not take pride in present blessings.

Key themes include the transient nature of worldly possessions in human life. Through this wisdom, we receive the message that we should comprehend the impermanence of the world and focus on our spiritual growth instead of chasing after material gains. This concept of Zuhd liberates us from the love of the world and redirects our attention towards Allah.

The moral and spiritual lesson here is that one should minimize the love for worldly possessions in their heart and prioritize seeking Allah's pleasure. This definition of Zuhd indicates that a person who does not grieve over worldly losses and does not boast about Allah's blessings has truly attained a high level of asceticism.

Practically, the message of this wisdom is to create balance in our lives. Instead of being engulfed in the love of worldly possessions, we should focus on our spiritual development. Additionally, we should be grateful for Allah's blessings and use them in a reasonable and moderate manner.
