In Sermon (194), Imam Ali (a.s.) reflects on the state of the world at the time when Allah sent His Messenger ﷺ. This was a time when there were no signs of guidance, no towering minaret of religion, and no clear path of law. In highlighting the chaos and aimlessness of that era, the Imam advises people to fear Allah and warns them about the transient nature of this world.
The Imam describes the world as a place of idleness and bad temper, where individuals become ensnared in meaninglessness. He emphasizes that those who inhabit this world will ultimately be compelled to move away from it, and those who remain will turn their backs on it. This is illustrated with the metaphor of a ship being tossed about in a storm, where some have drowned while others are struggling against the waves and winds.
This sermon teaches us the importance of recognizing the ephemeral nature of the world. The Imam's counsel is to engage in good deeds while we still have health and the ability to act. Time is limited, and we should not wait for death to come upon us. Instead, we should seize the moment to perform righteous actions so that we may succeed in the Hereafter.
The teachings of the Imam remind us of the necessity of understanding the reality of life and the responsibility to strive for good deeds. This sermon is not only a reflection of religious teachings but also a commentary on the truths of human existence.
