In Sermon (208), Imam Ali (a.s.) sheds light on the differences in hadiths and their causes. This sermon was delivered at a time when questions were being raised among people regarding various hadiths, particularly those that were fabricated and conflicting. Imam Ali (a.s.) clarified that truth and falsehood, authenticity and fabrication, and different categories of hadiths exist among the people.
He stated that even during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), slanders were directed at him, leading him to declare that anyone who deliberately lies about him should prepare for a place in hell. This highlights the necessity of scrutinizing the authenticity and origin of hadiths, as many individuals may present false narrations for personal gain.
Imam Ali (a.s.) mentioned four types of narrators: the first is one who outwardly professes faith but is inwardly hypocritical. The second is someone who hears some hadiths but forgets them, while the third is one who retains abrogated hadiths without knowledge of their abrogation. The fourth is the one who accurately narrates hadiths without alteration. These classifications teach us the importance of assessing the integrity and memory of the narrators.
The moral and spiritual lesson is that we should always seek the truth and avoid falsehood. It is crucial to understand that preserving knowledge and ensuring its accuracy is of utmost importance. Practically, we should base our decisions on sound knowledge and strive for the correct interpretation of hadiths.
