In Sermon (221), Imam Ali (a.s.) discusses the state of poverty and need of his brother Aqeel and the bribe offered by Ash'ath Ibn Qays. This sermon reflects the circumstances of the time when Imam Ali was engaged in the responsibilities of leadership. Aqeel, the Imam's brother, was facing severe financial hardship, to the extent that he was asking for a saa of wheat from the Imam. This incident highlights that Imam Ali never compromised his principles for worldly wealth, even when it came to his own family members.
Upon witnessing Aqeel's condition, the Imam demonstrated a tough love approach, intending to make him realize how the pursuit of worldly possessions can lead to humiliation. He heated a piece of iron and brought it near Aqeel to illustrate that if he was screaming from this minor pain, what would happen to him in the face of hellfire? This powerful metaphor serves to remind that one must face the consequences of their actions.
The Imam also emphasized the transient nature of worldly life and its insignificance. He stated that even if he were given the seven climates, he would never disobey Allah. This is a crucial lesson that one should not chase after worldly pleasures but rather focus on spiritual development and the afterlife.
From this sermon, we learn that we must adhere to our morals and principles, regardless of how difficult the circumstances may be. Imam Ali's words remind us that the temporary joys of this world should never outweigh our spiritual and ethical values.
