Letter (27): In the name of Muhammad Ibn Abi Bakr, he was entrusted with the government of Egypt
Letter (27) is an important document from Imam Ali (a.s.) to Muhammad Ibn Abi Bakr when he was appointed as the governor of Egypt. This letter was written at a time when Imam Ali (a.s.) sought to ensure that his appointed leaders uphold justice and morality in their governance. The letter contains not only political guidance but also ethical and spiritual advice. Imam Ali (a.s.) emphasizes the importance of humility and kindness when dealing with people, ensuring that the powerful do not exploit their position and that the weak do not lose hope in justice.
A significant message in this letter is that Allah will hold every individual accountable for their actions, whether they are small or great, apparent or hidden. Imam Ali (a.s.) points out that if Allah punishes, it is a consequence of one's own deeds, and if He forgives, it is a demonstration of His mercy. This serves as an important lesson that individuals must take responsibility for their actions.
Imam Ali (a.s.) highlights the importance of piety, stating that the righteous reap benefits in both this world and the Hereafter. They live well in this world and are close to Allah in the next. This reminds us that success in this life should not overshadow our quest for success in the Hereafter.
The letter also addresses the reality of death and its inevitability. Imam Ali (a.s.) mentions that death pursues every person and cannot be escaped. Therefore, one should prepare for it and engage in good deeds with a fear of Allah. A key takeaway is that one should not wait for death to prepare but should act righteously at every moment.
Imam Ali (a.s.) advises Muhammad Ibn Abi Bakr to sacrifice for his faith and not to anger Allah for the sake of pleasing others. This counsel underscores the importance of understanding one's responsibilities and adhering to them.
Finally, Imam Ali (a.s.) stresses the importance of prayer, instructing that it should be performed at its designated times. This serves as a crucial reminder that one's actions must be anchored in prayer. This letter is not just a political directive but also a spiritual guide that encourages righteous actions and closeness to Allah.
