Detailed Explanation — Letter (33): In the name of Makkah Qasim Ibn Abbas

This letter is a remarkable example of the wisdom and insight of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), addressed to Qasim Ibn Abbas, the governor of Makkah. The historical context of this letter is set during the early days of the Islamic caliphate when there was a pressing need for the correct interpretation and adherence to Islamic teachings across various regions. Imam Ali (a.s.) takes this opportunity to advise Qasim to be cautious of those who attempt to conflate truth with falsehood.

In this letter, Imam Ali (a.s.) describes individuals as blind in heart, deaf in ears, and deprived of the light of sight. These phrases reflect the condition of those who seek worldly benefits under the guise of religion. Imam highlights that such individuals obey creation in the disobedience of Allah and exploit religion for their worldly desires.

Imam Ali (a.s.) instructs Qasim to perform his duties with understanding, firmness, benevolence, and wisdom. This is a crucial message that emphasizes the importance of taking one’s responsibilities seriously and always keeping Allah’s pleasure in focus. He also warns against committing any act that might require an apology, which aligns with the foundational teachings of Islam.

The letter teaches us to remain steadfast in the face of difficulties and not to become arrogant during times of prosperity. Both situations test an individual's character. The spiritual and moral lessons from this letter guide us to remain committed to the path of Allah, regardless of the circumstances we may face.
