Detailed Explanation — Letter (78): To Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, in response to a letter from him regarding the Rulers

Letter (78) is a significant correspondence from Imam Ali (peace be upon him) to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, addressing issues related to rulers and the state of the Muslim community. This letter was written during a time when the Islamic society was facing various challenges, particularly sectarian differences and political instability. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) condemns the tendency of people to chase after worldly desires, which leads them to be deprived of the blessings of the Hereafter.

The Imam expresses his astonishment at how people have become self-righteous and self-absorbed, focusing more on each other's flaws rather than healing their wounds. This serves as an important message that we should work on our own improvement while also helping others; otherwise, we risk reaching a state where healing becomes impossible.

He clarifies his sincere intention of desiring unity among the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him) solely for the sake of Allah's reward and success in the Hereafter. This teaches us the importance of sincerity in our intentions, especially when addressing communal issues.

The Imam also points out that those who are deprived of the benefits of wisdom and experience, despite having them, are indeed wretched. This emphasizes the lesson that we must utilize our intellect and experiences and not blindly trust others’ words.

Finally, Imam Ali advises against pursuing matters that one does not understand, as malicious individuals are always ready to spread falsehoods. This teaches us the importance of critical thinking and the need to verify information before accepting it.

Overall, this letter serves as a reminder of the necessity for unity and cooperation, urging us to set aside our differences and assist one another in the pursuit of a common good.
