In Sermon (125), Imam Ali (a.s.) addresses the beliefs of the Khawarij and clarifies their misconceptions. This sermon was delivered during a time when the Khawarij had revolted against his leadership and had formed a negative opinion about him. The Imam reminds his audience that if they consider him misguided, then why do they label the general members of Muhammad's ummah as misguided because of his mistakes? This is a critical point that highlights how the Khawarij, in their emotional response, sought to punish innocent Muslims for what they perceived as his errors. The Imam emphasizes that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) dealt justly with sinners and did not expel them from Islam.
The Imam characterizes the behavior of the Khawarij as evil and indicates that they are followers of Satan. This conveys the message that it is wrong to label the entire community as disbelievers based on the mistakes of a few individuals. He also states that excessive love or hatred towards him would lead to destruction, and only those who take a moderate path will succeed. This implies that we should strive for balance and avoid extremes in our beliefs and actions.
The Imam stresses the importance of unity, stating that Allah's hand is with the congregation. This teaches us that we must avoid division and discord, as these lead to the influence of Satan. He issues a stern warning that anyone who raises slogans against him, even if it is himself, should be killed. This is a strong message indicating that sometimes harsh decisions are necessary to uphold the truth.
Finally, the Imam explains the appointment of the two arbitrators (Abu Musa and Amr ibn al-As) and states that their purpose was to judge according to the teachings of the Quran. However, they failed to do so. This underscores the importance of selecting the right individuals for leadership roles, and if they deviate from the principles of the Quran, their decisions should not be accepted.
