Sermon (130): In Warning About Death
In Sermon 130, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) discusses the reality of death and its inevitability. This sermon is set against a significant historical backdrop when the Islamic society was flourishing, yet people were engrossed in the pursuit of worldly wealth. The Imam reminds the people that death is a truth that no one can escape.
He begins by praising Allah for everything He gives and takes, emphasizing that all experiences, whether blessings or trials, are from Him. Following this, he elaborates on the truth of death, stating that it is an event every human must face, regardless of their wealth or power. This message invites us to reflect on the reality of our existence and the transient nature of life.
The Imam provides examples of those who came before, who hoarded wealth and feared poverty, yet when death approached, they had to leave everything behind. This serves as a vital lesson that attachment to worldly possessions can blind us to the reality of death. He asserts that those who cultivate God-consciousness (taqwa) will ultimately succeed.
Furthermore, this sermon reminds us that this world is not our permanent abode; rather, it is a passage where we should gather provisions for the hereafter. We should strive to embody taqwa in our lives and increase our good deeds, as the time of death can come unexpectedly. The Imam advises readiness for the journey ahead, urging us to prepare ourselves appropriately for the inevitable departure from this world.
