Sermon Sermon : 130

Sermon (130): In Warning About Death

We praise and extol Him for whatever He takes and whatever He gives, and whatever blessings He bestows, and whatever trials He puts (us in). He is aware of the depths of every hidden thing, and is present and watching over every concealed thing. He is the Knower of things hidden in chests and the secret signals of eyes. We bear witness that there is no deity except Him, and Muhammad is His chosen (servant) and sent (messenger). Such a testimony in which the apparent and hidden are equal, and heart and tongue are in agreement. A part of this sermon is: By Allah, that thing which is truth from head to toe is not play, and is truth from head to toe, not falsehood. It is only death. Its caller has delivered his voice, and its driver has created haste. Do not let this (abundance of) living people deceive your self (that you forget your death). You have seen those people who were before you, who had gathered wealth and property, who feared poverty, and had become fearless of consequences due to (being deceived by) the length of hopes and the distance of death. How death fell upon them and took them out from their homeland and seized them from their place of security, in such a state that they were loaded on biers, and people were giving shoulders one after another, and were holding with their fingers. Have you not seen those people who had bound long hopes, who had built strong palaces, and had collected heaps of wealth? How their houses became graves, and the collected wealth was destroyed, and their wealth became the property of heirs, and their widows reached others. (Now) they can neither add anything to good deeds, nor is there any opportunity for them to obtain Allah's satisfactions after any sin (by repenting). Whoever made his heart God-conscious has taken precedence in good deeds, and his trade has become profitable. Consider the opportunity to gain God-consciousness as booty, and perform the deed that should be for Paradise. For the world has not been made your place of residence. Rather, it is a passage for you so that you may gather provisions from it for your permanent place of residence. Remain prepared to depart from this world, and bring the mounts for journey close to yourself (so that when the time comes, you may mount easily).
