Detailed Explanation — Letter (13): Names of two army chiefs

This letter highlights the wisdom and leadership qualities of Imam Ali (peace be upon him). It is addressed to two military commanders, Ziyad Ibn Nazr and Shareeh Ibn Hani, who were sent towards Syria. The Imam appointed Malik Ibn Harith Ishtar as their commander and instructed them to obey him. This letter was written during a time when the Islamic caliphate faced various challenges, and Imam Ali (a.s.) emphasized the capabilities and experience of his military leaders.

In the letter, the Imam describes the qualities of Malik Ishtar, reflecting his leadership abilities. The Imam states that Malik is not afraid of weakness or slippage and possesses the ability to make sound decisions according to the circumstances. This serves as an important lesson that wisdom, experience, and decision-making skills are essential for leadership.

The Imam also instructs them to consider Malik as their armor and shield, indicating that he is a source of protection and guidance. This conveys a spiritual and practical message that a good leader acts as a protector for their people.

From this letter, we learn the importance of valuing our leaders and following their guidance, especially when they make decisions based on wisdom and experience. It reminds us that leadership is not just about wielding power but also involves wisdom, patience, and making the right decisions at the right time.
