Letter (9): : Names of Muawiya
Our nation (Quraysh) intended to kill our Prophet and uproot us and caused us grief and misery, and misbehaved with us. He stopped us from rest and comfort and kept us in twos and fours with constant fear and terror and forced us to take refuge in a rocky and uneven mountain and raised the fire of war for us. Our believers were hopeful of reward due to these hardships. And our infidels considered support necessary due to their kinship. And the people who believed in the Quraysh were far away from the calamities that befell us because of the covenant that was made to protect them or because of the tribe that stood up to protect them, so they were safe from being killed. And he used to save himself from the blow of the sword. So Ubaidah Ibn Harith was martyred in Badr, Hamzah in Uhud and Jafar in Jang Muta and another person also said that if I want, I can take his name. They did not want to be martyred like people. But his age was completed soon and his death was delayed. At this age, it is surprising that such a name is taken with me. Those who have never shown my speedy progress in the field of Sa'i, nor for them I have such long-standing Islamic services, services that no one can provide an example of. But that a claimant claims something that I do not know and I do not think that Allah would know it (that is, if He knows anything), in any case, thanks be to Allah.
O Muawiya! Your request that I hand over the murderers of Usman to you, I have considered every aspect of it and I have come to the conclusion that handing them over to you or anyone other than you is beyond my authority, and by my life! If you do not stop your misguidance and anarchism, you will recognize them very soon, they will come looking for you and you will not bother to look for them in forests, rivers, mountains and plains. But it will be a desired one, the acquisition of which will be a source of displeasure for you, and those who will come will be those whose meeting will not make you happy. Peace be upon him who is worthy of peace.
