Sermon (153): The Strange Creation of the Bat

In this, mention is made of the strange creation of the bat. All praise is for that Allah, Whose attributes are incapable of manifesting the reality of His knowledge, and Whose greatness and height has stopped the intellects, so they do not find any path to reach the limit of His dominion. He is the Owner of power, and (completely) truth and (the) manifestor of truth. He is even more established and manifest (in His position) than those things that eyes see. Intellects cannot reach Him by limiting Him so that He becomes similar to others, nor can we estimate that He becomes like something. He created the creatures without any model or example, and without any advisor's consultation, and without any helper's aid. By His command, the creatures reached their perfection and bowed for His obedience, and said 'Here I am' without stopping, and became obedient to Him without any dispute or resistance. What deep wisdoms are there in the subtleties of His craftsmanship and the strange workings of His creation, which He has shown us in bats, whose eyes (daylight) constricts, although He is the one who spreads (light) in all eyes, and darkness opens their eyes, although He is the one who casts a veil on every living thing's eyes. And how do their eyes become dazzled in the shining sun, so that they may take help from its light-spreading rays to come to their paths, and may reach their known things in the spread of sunlight. He has prevented them from advancing in the manifestations of light with the radiance of His light-spreading, and has hidden them in their hidden places, so that they may come in the brightnesses of its light. In the daytime, they are such that their eyelids droop and hang on the eyes, and they take the darkness of night as their lamp and take help from it in searching for sustenance. The darknesses of night do not prevent their eyes from seeing, nor do its deep darknesses stop them from traveling. But when the sun removes the veil from its face, and the brightnesses of day emerge, and the sun's rays reach even inside the holes of lizards, they droop their eyelids on their eyes, and spend their time on the sustenance that was obtained in the darknesses of night. Glory be to Allah, Who made night for their earning of sustenance and day for rest and peace, and made their wings from their own flesh, and when the need to fly arises, they rise high with those wings, as if they are the lobes of ears, that they have neither feathers nor membranes. But you will see the place of their veins that its marks are apparent, and in it are attached two wings that are neither so thin that they tear, nor so thick that they become heavy (so they cannot fly). When they fly, the young cling to them. When they bend downward, the young also bend, and when they rise high, the young also rise high, and do not separate until strength comes to their limbs, and their wings become capable of carrying their (weight) for rising. They recognize the paths of their life and their interests. Pure is that God Who, without any model that anyone made before Him, is the Creator of all these things.
