Concerning the two arbiters: it was your own group who agreed to choose them. We made them pledge that they would act according to the Quran, letting their tongues and hearts fully submit to it. Yet they strayed from the Quran and abandoned truth, even though it was before their eyes. Injustice was their desire and deviation their method, even though we had previously bound them to judge with justice, without malice or bias. So when they turned away from the correct path and ruled contrary to the settlement, we had a clear and powerful argument to reject their decision.
