Sermon Sermon : 88

Sermon (88): On the Attributes of the Almighty

All praise is to Allah, Who is known without being seen, and Who creates without deliberation. He was eternal and permanent when there was no sky with towers, no high gates of veils, no dark nights, no still sea, no mountains with long and wide paths, no crooked mountain paths, and no earth spread with angels, and no creature that could be grasped. He is the Creator of creatures and their inheritor, the deity of the universe and their sustainer. The sun and moon are striving according to His will (on a course) to make new things old and bring distant things near. He has distributed sustenance to all. He knows their actions and conduct, and even the count of their breaths. He encompasses the hidden glances, the secret intentions of chests, their places in loins, and the places where they are entrusted in wombs, until their ages reach their limit. He is such a Being that despite the vastness of His mercy, His punishment is severe on enemies, and despite the severity of His punishment, His mercy is vast for friends. He is the One who overpowers whoever tries to suppress Him, destroys whoever tries to clash with Him, disgraces whoever opposes Him, and prevails over whoever shows enmity to Him. Whoever trusts in Him, He suffices for him, and whoever asks from Him, He gives to him, and whoever gives Him a loan (i.e., spends in His path), He repays it. Whoever is grateful, He rewards him. O servants of Allah! Weigh yourselves before you are weighed, and account yourselves before you are accounted. Take breath before the noose tightens, and become obedient and submissive before you are driven with severity. And remember that whoever does not have this success for his soul to admonish and warn himself against evils, then no one else's admonition and rebuke can affect him.
