Sermon (138): On Prohibiting Backbiting and Fault-Finding
In this, he has prevented people from describing others' faults. Those people whose hem is pure and clean from errors and who are protected from sins by Allah's grace should have mercy on sinners and wrongdoers, and gratitude for this thing (that Allah has kept them protected from sins) should be dominant over them and prevent (them from exposing others' faults). What to say of the fault-finder who does evil behind his brother's back and criticizes and reproaches by describing his faults. Why does he not remember Allah's covering over him that He did on his own such sins that were greater than this sin about which he is backbiting, and how does he criticize someone for such a sin when he himself has also committed the same sin, and if he has not done exactly the same sin, he has done such sins that were even greater than it. By Allah! Even if he had not committed a major sin and had only committed a minor one, still his describing people's faults is a very great sin. O servant of Allah, do not quickly attach the fault of sin to anyone, perhaps Allah has forgiven it, and do not be satisfied even with your smallest sin, perhaps punishment may come to you for it. So whoever among you knows the faults of others should refrain from expressing them due to the knowledge he has about his own sins, and gratitude for the fact that Allah has kept him protected from those things in which others are involved should not let him turn to any other direction.
