Wisdom 153
Wisdom (153): Kumail ibn Ziyad al-Nakha'i says that Amir al-Mu'minin Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) took my hand and led me towards the grave. When he left the village, he sighed deeply. Then he said, O Kumail! These hearts are vessels of secrets and commandments. The best of them are the ones who are the most careful. So remember what I tell you. Look! There are three types of people: one is the divine scholar, the other is the learned who remains steadfast on the path of salvation, and the third is the lowly group of the common people who follow every caller and turn to every wind. They have neither gained light from the light of knowledge, nor have they sought refuge in any strong support. O Kumail! Remember, knowledge is better than wealth (because) knowledge protects you and you have to protect wealth, and wealth decreases with spending, but knowledge increases with spending, and the results and effects of wealth and wealth are different from the destruction of wealth. They perish. O Kumail! Knowledge is a religion that is followed by a person, and by it, he commands others to obey him in his life and earns a good name after death. Remember that knowledge is the ruler and wealth is the subject. O Kumail! Those who accumulate wealth die despite being alive, and those who acquire knowledge remain for the rest of the world. Indeed, their bodies disappear from sight. But their forms remain in the hearts. (After this, the Prophet pointed to his sacred chest and said) Look! There is a great store of knowledge here. I wish I could find its bearers. Yes, I did. Someone. Or someone who is intelligent but unsatisfied, and who uses religion as a tool for the world and, because of these blessings of Allah, claims superiority over His servants and over His friends because of His arguments. Or someone who is obedient to the Lord of Truth and Knowledge, but the corners of his heart are filled with There is no light of insight in me, just a little doubt has arisen here and there, so that sparks of doubt and suspicion start to flare up in his heart, then it should be known that neither he nor she is capable of this. Or is there a person who is consumed by pleasures and is easily drawn to the path of self-interest, or a person who is devoted to collecting and hoarding. Both of these are not those who respect and uphold any matter of religion. The closest resemblance to both of them is that of grazing cattle. Similarly, knowledge ends with the death of the treasurers of knowledge. Yes! But the earth is not empty of such a person who upholds the proof of God, whether he is visible and famous or fearful and hidden, so that the proofs and signs of God are not erased. And how many are they and where are they? By God, they are very few in number, and very high in value and status in the sight of God. Through them, the Lord of the Worlds reveals His proofs and signs. He protects them. Until they entrust them to their own people and sow them in the hearts of their own people. Knowledge has brought them to the revelations of truth and insight in an instant. They have become imbued with the spirit of certainty and trust and have considered those things that the easy-going people had considered difficult as easy for them and they are engrossed in those things that the ignorant are enraged by. They live in this world with bodies whose souls are attached to the higher angels. These are the ones who are the vicegerents of Allah on earth and invite to His religion. Oh, the abundance of my desire for their sight (then Hazrat said to Kumail) O Kumail! (I have said what I had to say) Now go back whenever you wish. Kumail Ibn Ziyad Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) was the treasurer of the secrets of Imamate and one of the special companions of Amir al-Mu'minin, who was high in knowledge and virtue and distinguished in asceticism and protection. He was appointed by Hazrat for some time as a member of the staff. Amil was martyred in 38 AH at the age of 9 at the hands of Hajjaj Ibn Yusuf Thaqafi and was buried outside Kufa.
