Sermon (106): On Describing the Prophet
This is among those sermons in which mention is made of the events and seditions of time: All praise is to Allah, Who is manifest to creatures because of His creatures, and prominent in hearts through His courage and proof, and prominent in hearts through His courage and proof. He created the creation without falling into thought. For thinking is appropriate for one who has heart and mind (like organs). And He is free from the need of heart and mind. His knowledge has penetrated the veils of the unseen and has descended to the depths of beliefs. This part of the sermon is about the Prophet: He was chosen from the tree of prophets, the center of light (the family of Abraham, peace be upon him), the forehead of elevation (Quraysh), the navel of Batha (Mecca), and the lamps of darkness and the springs of wisdom. This part of the sermon is also about the Messenger: He was a physician who was going around with his wisdom and medicine. He had prepared his ointments and heated his cauterizing instruments. He used these things wherever needed in treating blind hearts, deaf ears, and mute tongues, and was searching for those who were overcome by negligence and bewilderment and distress with medicine. But people neither gained light and illumination from the illuminations of wisdom, nor struck the flint of brilliant sciences to produce luminous flames. They are like grazing animals and hard stones in this matter. For the people of insight, hidden things have become apparent, and for the wanderers, the path of truth has become clear, and the coming hour has lifted the veil from its face, and signs have become apparent for those who look carefully. But I see you as bodies without souls and souls without bodies, worshipers wandering without piety and God-consciousness, and traders awake for benefits but sleeping, present but as if absent, seeing but blind, hearing but deaf, mute speaking misguidance, but your mounts... The banner has reached its center, and its branches have spread (everywhere). It is weighing you in its scales (to destroy you), and is making you wander here and there with its hands. Its forerunner is outside the religion (Islam), and it is standing firm on misguidance. On that day, none of you will escape. Except some fallen people like the scraping of a pot or the fragments that fall from shaking a bag. That misguidance will crush you as leather is crushed, and will trample you as cut crops are trampled, and will pick the perfect believer from among you as birds pick the large grain from among fine grains. Where are these (wrong) ways taking you, and what troubles are these blindnesses putting you in, and what are false hopes deceiving you for? From where are you being brought, and to where are you being turned? Every term has a decree, and every absent one must return. Listen from your own knowledge. Make your hearts present. If you are called, wake up. The representative of the people should speak truthfully to his people, and should create focus in his troubled mind, and should keep his mind present. So he has made the truth clear in such a way as a bead is cut (from a thread), and has peeled it off (from the layer) as gum is peeled from a tree. Despite this, falsehood has returned to its center, and ignorance has mounted its mounts. Its rebellions have increased, and the voice of truth has been suppressed, and time has attacked like a tearing beast, and the camel of falsehood has started bellowing again after being silent. People have made brotherhood with each other in sin and corruption, and there is division among them in the matter of religion. They have tied friendship with each other in falsehood, and keep grudges with each other in the matter of truth. (On such an occasion) the son will be a cause of anger and wrath (instead of being the coolness of the eyes), and rains will spread the abode of heat and burning, and honor will decrease. The people of that time will be wolves, and the rulers will be beasts. The middle class will be those who eat and drink and remain intoxicated, and the poor and rich will be completely dead. Truth will be suppressed, and falsehood will emerge. (Words of) love will only come on tongues, and people will remain distant from each other in hearts. The standard of lineage will be adultery. Chastity and purity will be considered strange things. And the cloak of Islam will be worn upside down like a skin.
