Sermon (107): On the Greatness of Allah and the Elevation of Angels
Everything is humble and prostrate before Him, and every thing is attached to His support. He is the capital of every poor, the honor of every degraded, the strength of every weak, and the refuge of every oppressed. Whoever speaks, He also hears his speech, and whoever remains silent, He is also aware of his secret. Whoever is alive, the responsibility of his sustenance is on Him, and whoever dies, his return is to Him. (O Allah) The eyes have not seen You to be able to inform about You, but You existed before that describing creation. You did not create the creation out of boredom from (the loneliness of) solitude, nor did You make them perform actions for any benefit of Yours. Whoever You want to seize cannot go ahead of You, and whoever You have seized cannot escape. Whoever opposes You, it is not that he harms Your dominion, and whoever obeys You does not increase the kingdom (in its expanses), and whoever is displeased with Your decree and destiny cannot reject Your command, and whoever turns away from Your command cannot become independent of You. Every hidden thing is apparent to You, and every unseen is unveiled before You. You are eternal with no limit, and You are the (ultimate) destination of all, from which there is no way of escape, and You are the promised place, and there is no place to escape from You, except Your own Essence. Every traveler is in Your grasp, and every living being returns to You. Glory be to Allah! How magnificent is this creation of Yours that we see! And how small is their greatness before Your power! And how splendid is Your kingdom that is before our eyes! But how insignificant it is compared to that dominion of Yours that is hidden from our sight! And how complete and comprehensive are these blessings of Yours in the world, but how short they are compared to the blessings of the Hereafter! A part of this sermon is: You settled the angels in the heavens, and kept them elevated from the surface of the earth. They have more knowledge of You than all creation, and they fear You most, and they are closest to You. They did not stay in loins, nor were they placed in wombs, nor was their birth from lowly water (sperm), nor did the events of time scatter them. Despite their elevation in status and position in Your proximity, and the focus of their thoughts about You, and the abundance of their worship of You, and the lack of negligence in Your commands, if they reach that depth of Your secrets of power that is hidden from them, they will consider their actions very insignificant and will find fault with themselves and will know that they have not fulfilled the right of Your worship, nor have they obeyed You properly. I glorify You knowing You as Creator and Deity. Based on Your best treatment, which is Your treatment with Your creatures. You have made such a house (Paradise) in which there are food and drink for hospitality, houris, young servants, palaces, rivers, fields, and fruits. Then You sent one to invite to these blessings, but they did not respond to the caller's voice, nor were they attracted to the things for which You had created attraction, nor did they become desirous of the things for which You had created desire. They fell upon this dead world, in devouring which they were losing their honor and dignity, and they became one with its desire. Whoever loves something excessively, it blinds his eyes and makes his heart sick. He sees with sick eyes and hears with ears that do not hear. Desires have torn the hem of his intellect, and the world has made his heart dead, and his self has overwhelmed him. This world and those who have anything of it have become servants and slaves. Wherever it turns, he turns; wherever its face is, his face is there. He does not stop from the saying and hearing of any preventer from Allah, nor does he accept the advice of any advisor and counselor. Although he sees those people who were seized there in the very state of negligence, where there is no room for remedy and no opportunity to return to the world. And how those things fell upon them of which they were unaware, and somehow the separation from this world (the moment) came, with which they were completely satisfied, and somehow they reached those things of the Hereafter of which they had been informed. Now the calamities that have fallen upon them cannot be described. The hardships of death and the regrets of leaving the world together surround them. So their hands and feet become loose, and their colors change. Then the intrusions of death increase in them (their limbs). Sometimes someone's tongue is closed first, while his intellect is correct and his senses remain. He lies before his household, seeing with his eyes and hearing with his ears, and thinking of those things in which he wasted his life and spent his time, and remembering his collected wealth and possessions, in seeking which he had closed his eyes (from lawful and unlawful), and which he had obtained from clean and suspicious places of all kinds. Its burden began to prepare to take it on his head and leave it. That wealth will remain for his successors so that they may enjoy it and throw flowers. Thus he gave it to others without moving hands and feet, but its burden remained on his back. And he has become so mortgaged because of this wealth that he cannot free himself. When this reality became clear to him at the time of death, he began to bite his hands in regret, and now seeks distance from those things for which he was a seeker all his life, and wishes that those who used to envy and be jealous of him because of this wealth (if only) they would gather this wealth. Now the intrusions of death increase in his body until death covers the ears along with the tongue. Before his household, his condition is such that he cannot speak with the tongue nor hear with the ears. He turns his eyes to look at their faces. He sees the movements of their tongues, but cannot hear the sounds of conversation. Then death clings to him and closes his eyes as it had closed his ears, and the soul separates from his body. Now he lies before his household like a corpse, from which they feel horror, and they flee from being near it. He cannot help the one who weeps, nor can he answer the one who calls. Then they take him and bring him to the earth where his grave is to be made, and entrust him to it, that now it is his going and his work, and they turn away from meeting him forever. Until the decree (destiny) reaches its term and the command of Allah reaches its appointed limit, and the latter are joined with the former, and the decree of destiny comes again with the intention of creating from the beginning, then it will set the heavens in motion and will tear them, and will shake the earth and will tear it, and will shake the earth, and will hollow its foundations, and will uproot the mountains from their roots. And they will collide with each other due to the awe of His majesty and the terror of His wrath and dominance. He will bring out everyone from within the earth, and will make them fresh again after they have rotted, and will gather them after they have been scattered and dispersed. Then He will separate them to question them about their hidden actions and concealed deeds, and will divide them into two parts. He will give reward and honor to one, and will take revenge from one. He will reward those who were obedient, that they may remain in His gardens of mercy, and will settle them forever in His house, where those who alight do not travel again, and their conditions do not change, and they are not tormented from moment to moment, nor do diseases come upon them, nor do dangers face them, nor do they travel from one place to another. And those who were disobedient, He will throw them into a bad house, and will bind their hands to their necks (tightly), and will bind the hair hanging from their foreheads to their feet, and will make them wear shirts of tar and clothes cut from the front (i.e., He will sprinkle oil on them and throw them into the fire). They will be in such punishment that its heat will be very severe, and in such a place that doors will be closed on them, and in such a fire that has sharp sparks, sounds of blazing, rising flames, and terrible screams. The one staying in it will not be able to come out, nor can its prisoners be freed by paying ransom, nor can their chains be broken. This house has no fixed duration that it will disappear after it. There is no fixed term for the dwellers that it will be completed (then they will be released). This part of the sermon is about the Prophet: They considered this world low and degraded and knew it as base and worthless, and they knew that Allah, considering their status higher, had turned the world's face away from them, and considering it lowly, had spread its skirt for others. So they turned their hearts away from the world and erased its memory from their selves, and they desired that its adornment remain hidden from their eyes, that they neither obtain fine clothes from it, nor establish residence in it. They delivered their Lord's message completely, and counseled the ummah while warning, and invited to Paradise while giving glad tidings, and warned of Hell while making examples. We are the tree of prophethood, the station of messengership, the landing place of angels, the mine of knowledge, and the spring of wisdom. The one who helps us and loves us should wait for mercy, and the one who has enmity and animosity toward us should wait for (divine) poison.
