Sermon (108): On the Obligations of Islam

The best means for those who seek a means to Allah is to believe in Allah and His Messenger and to fight in His path, which is the lofty peak of Islam. And the word of monotheism is that nature (voice), and adherence to prayer is the essence of religion, and paying zakat, which is an obligation and duty, and fasting in the month of Ramadan, which are shields against punishment, and performing Hajj and Umrah of the House of Kaaba, which remove poverty and wash away sins. And treating relatives well, which is the cause of increase in wealth and lengthening of life. And giving charity secretly, which is expiation for sins, and giving charity openly, which saves from a bad death, and doing favors to people, which saves from occasions of degradation and disgrace. Advance in the remembrance of Allah, for it is the best remembrance, and become desirous of that thing which Allah has promised to the God-conscious, for its promise is the truest of all promises. Follow the conduct of the Prophet, for it is the best conduct. And walk on his Sunnah, for it is the most guiding of all ways, and acquire the knowledge of the Quran, for it is the best speech! And reflect on it, for it is the spring of hearts, and seek healing from its light, for it is healing for (the diseases hidden within) chests. And recite it with its beauty, for it is more beneficial than its events. The scholar who does not act according to his knowledge is like a wandering ignorant who does not come to his senses from the intoxications of ignorance. Rather, the proof against him is greater, and regret and sorrow are necessary for him, and regret and sorrow are necessary for him. And he is more blameworthy to Allah.
