Sermon (166): When People Demanded Retribution Against the Killers of Uthman, He Said
After his allegiance had been secured, a group of the companions came to him and said, "It would be best if you took action against those who fought against Uthman." The Imam replied: "O brothers! I am not unaware of what you know, but where is my power to do so when those who attacked are at the height of their strength? They have the upper hand over us, and we do not have dominance over them. Your own learned men have joined their ranks, and the Bedouin Arabs have allied with them. Even now, while among you, they can do as they please. Do you see any way to enforce what you demand? Surely, this is a demand springing from ignorance. Behind these people is a wealth of support. Once this issue is raised, opinions will become divided, some agreeing with you, some opposed, and some undecided. So wait until things settle, tempers calm and rights can be obtained with ease. Be content with my approach; observe what command reaches you from me. Take no action that would weaken strength, waste resources, or lead to disgrace. I will withhold from war as long as possible, but when there is no other way, then the last resort is always available."
