Sermon (165): Observance of Rights and Duties and Advice to Fear Allah in All Matters
Allah has sent down a Book of guidance in which He has made clear good and evil. Turn away from evil so that you may walk the straight path. Keep your obligations in mind and fulfill them for Allah, so that these duties may lead you to Paradise. Allah has only forbidden things that are well-known, and made lawful that which contains no flaw. He has honored the dignity of Muslims above all others, and bound their rights to their worthiness and sincerity. A true Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe, except when rightful justice requires otherwise; causing harm is not permitted except where duty necessitates it. Pursue only that which is universal and pertains to each of you: death. For those who have passed are before you; while the moment of death drives you forward from behind. Remain light-burdened so you may catch those gone ahead, for your forebears await their descendants. Fear Allah regarding His slaves and cities, for you will be questioned about all things, even about land and livestock. Obey Allah and do not turn away from Him; when you see good, seize it, and when you see evil, turn aside from it.
