Sermon (164): The Teaching of Compassion and the Downfall of Banu Umayyah

Let your young follow your elders, and let the elders act mercifully and kindly toward the young. Do not be like those crude men of the age of ignorance, neither possessing reason in religion nor understanding regarding Allah. They are like egg shells left in ostrich nests, which one hesitates to break but whose preservation serves only to produce trouble. Part of this sermon states: After love and unity, they will be separated from one another, dispersed from their centers, although some will cling to one branch, leaning wherever it bends, until Allah soon gathers them on a day most evil for Banu Umayyah. He will unite them like the fragments of a storm cloud from the autumn season. Allah will create love and friendship between them, forming them into a strong band layered like piled clouds, and will open the gates for them to burst out from their lands as a flood that overflows from two gardens, such that neither rock nor hill can resist it, nor can the strength of a mountain or the height of land turn its course. Allah will scatter them among valleys, will spread them in the land like flowing springs, using them to recover some people's rights from others, and setting one nation upon the towns of another. By God! Their ascendancy and authority will dissolve just like fat melts in fire. People! Had you not turned away from supporting the truth and weakening the falsehood, then one at your level could never have dominated you, and no one with power over you would prevail. But you have become lost and wandering like the Israelites in the wilderness of Tih. By my life, after me, your distress and confusion will increase manifold, for you have turned your backs to the truth, cut off kinship, and attached yourselves to strangers. If only you had answered the caller's summons, he would have led you on the Messenger of Allah's path, saving you from the misery of straying, and you would have cast off your heavy burdens.
