Sermon (111): On the World and the People of the World
I warn you about the world that it is the destination of a person for whom there is no settlement, and such a house in which water and grain cannot be found. It is adorned with its falsehood and deceives with its adornments. It is such a house that is low and degraded in the eyes of its Lord. So it has mixed the lawful with the unlawful, and good with evil, and life with death, and sweetness with bitterness, and has not kept it free from deception for its friends, nor has it been stingy in giving to enemies. Its goodnesses are very few, and evils are (wherever you want) present. Its accumulated wealth is going to end, and its kingdom is going to be taken away, and its settlements are going to become desolate. What good and excellence can there be in this house, which will fall like a demolished building, and in this life which will end like provisions for the journey, and in this duration which will finish like walking and moving? Include Allah the Exalted's obligations among the things you need to seek and search for, and also ask Him for the ability to fulfill what Allah has asked from you, and make your ears hear the call of death before the message of death comes. In this world, the hearts of the ascetics weep, even though they are laughing, and their grief and sorrow exceed the limit, even though joy drips from their (faces). And they have extreme aversion to their selves, even though envy is shown toward them because of the sustenance that is available to them. The remembrance of death has gone from your hearts, and false hopes are present (within you). The world covers you more than the Hereafter, and it pulls you toward itself more than the Hereafter. You are brothers to each other in the matter of the religion of Allah. But bad intention and misfortune have created division among you. You neither share each other's burdens, nor counsel each other, nor spend on each other, nor do you have love for each other. You become happy on getting a little of the world, and deprivation from the greater portion of the Hereafter does not make you sad. The world leaving your hands even a little makes you restless, until restlessness begins to appear on your faces, and your impatience becomes apparent on the lost thing. It is as if this world is your (permanent) place, and the world's equipment is everlasting. The only thing that prevents any of you from exposing such a fault of any of your brothers that you fear will be exposed is that he will also open such a fault of yours and place it before you. You have made a compromise on rejecting the Hereafter and desiring the world. So people's religion has become such that it is as if it is just licked once with the tongue (i.e., only verbal affirmation), and you have become like that person (satisfied) who has finished his work and business, and has obtained the satisfaction of his master.
