Sermon (117): When He Invited His Companions to Jihad and They Remained Silent, He Said
The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) gathered the people and wanted to prepare them for jihad, but those people remained silent for a long time. Then he said: What has happened to you? Have you become mute? Then a group said: O Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), if you go, we will also go with you. On this, the Imam said: What has happened to you? You have not been given the ability for guidance, nor have you been granted to see the straight path. Should I go out in such circumstances? At that time, the person whom I choose from among your brave men and strong ones should go. It is not appropriate for me to leave the army, the city, the treasury, the collection of land taxes, the settlement of Muslims' cases, and the care of the rights of those who demand, and go out with an army behind another army. And remain moving like an arrow without feathers in an empty quiver. I am that pivot inside the mill on which it rotates. As long as I remain in my place, and if I leave my position, its rotation will become unstable, and its lower stone will also become misplaced. By Allah! This is a bad advice. I swear by Allah! If I did not have hope of martyrdom from facing the enemy, while that confrontation has been decreed for me, I would bring my mounts close (to mount) and leave you and go, and as long as the southern and northern winds blow, I would never seek you. What benefit is there in your being more in number when you cannot be of one heart? I have placed you on the correct path, in which only that person will be destroyed who has prepared destruction for himself? And whoever remains firm on this path will go toward Paradise, and whoever slips will advance toward Hell.
