Sermon (140): On Prohibiting Inappropriate Giving and the Correct Use of Wealth

Whoever treats the undeserving well and does favors to the unworthy, it only happens that the base and evil begin to praise and extol him, and as long as he keeps giving, the ignorant keep saying how generous his hand is. While he is being miserly in Allah's matter. It should be that whoever Allah has given wealth should treat relatives well with it, entertain guests with good manners, free captives and distressed prisoners, give to the needy and debtors, and bear the burden of fulfilling rights and various hardships on his self for the sake of reward. For being adorned with these qualities and habits is being honored with the greatnesses of the world and gaining the excellences of the Hereafter, Allah willing.
