Sermon (141): In the Matter of Seeking Rain:
Look, this earth that carries you and this sky that spreads shade over you, both are under the command of your Lord. They do not enrich you with their blessings because their hearts are grieved over you, or they desire your nearness, or they are hopeful of any good from you. Rather, they are commanded to benefit you, which they fulfill, and they have been placed on the limits of your interests, so they remain there. (However) Allah the Exalted tests servants at the time of their evil deeds by reducing fruits, stopping blessings, and closing the treasures of bounties, so that the one who repents may repent, the one who refrains (from denial and rebellion) may refrain, the one who seeks advice and lesson may gain advice and insight, and the one who stops from sins may stop. Allah the Exalted has made repentance and seeking forgiveness the cause of sustenance descending and the means of showing mercy to creation. So His saying is: Repent and seek forgiveness from your Lord. Indeed, He is very Forgiving. He sends heavy rain upon you and supports you with wealth and children. May Allah have mercy on the person who turns to repentance and lifts his hands from sins and does good deeds before death. O Allah, send rain! Desiring Your mercy and seeking abundance of blessings and fearing Your punishment and wrath, we have come out toward You from the corners of homes. At this time when cattle are bleating and children are crying. O Allah, satiate us with rain, and do not disappoint us, and do not let us be destroyed by drought, and do not seize us for the deeds of some foolish ones among us. O Most Merciful of the merciful! O Allah! When severe hardships made us restless and anxious, and drought years made us helpless, and intense needs made us destitute, and the rope of stubborn seditions was tied on us, we have come out toward You, complaining of that which is not hidden from You. O Allah! We ask You that You do not return us deprived, and not in such a way that we are writhing on our selves, and do not address us (with rebuke) because of our sins, and do not treat us according to what we have done. O Lord! Spread the hem of rain and blessing and sustenance and mercy over us, and satiate us with such satiation that is beneficial and saturating and grows grass and vegetation, from which You may bring back growth to the past (crops) and run waves of life in dead lands. Let it be such satiation whose freshness is (completely) beneficial and has heaps of chosen fruits, from which You may make the level lands green and verdant, and streams may flow, and trees may become green with leaves and fruits, and prices may become cheap. Indeed, You have power over whatever You will.
