Sermon (122): He Said to Prepare His Companions for Battle in the Field of Siffin

Place the armored ones forward and put the unarmored ones behind, and clench your teeth, for this makes swords bounce off heads, and turn the spearheads sideways and leave them empty, for this makes their faces turn away from them. Keep your eyes lowered, for this keeps courage strong and hearts steady, and do not raise your voices, for this keeps cowardice away, and do not let your banner be lowered, and do not leave it alone. Keep it in the hands of your brave men and guardians of honor, for when calamities fall, they are the ones who are patient and surround it from front and back. They do not retreat to hand it over to the enemies, nor do they advance ahead to leave it alone. Every person should deal with his opponent himself, and also help his brother wholeheartedly, and should not hand over his opponent to another brother, lest this and his opponent unite and attack him. By Allah, if you flee from the sword of the world, you cannot escape from the sword of the Hereafter. You are the brave men and elevated ones of the Arabs. (Remember that) in fleeing there is Allah's wrath and indelible disgrace and eternal shame. The one who flees does not increase his life, nor does anything come between it and his day of death. The one going to Allah is like a thirsty one reaching water. Paradise is under the points of spears. Today conditions will be tested. By Allah, I am more eager to fight these enemies face to face than they are eager to return to their homes. O Lord! If they reject truth, break their groups and do not let them gather on one voice, and destroy them in recompense for their sins. They will not leave their position (of corruption) until there are such strikes of spears (that the wounds' openings open in such a way that) the breezes of wind can pass through, and such strikes of swords that split heads and scatter the fragments of bones and break and throw arms and legs, and successive armies are not made targets, and such armies do not fall upon them that have (for support) behind them and detachments of horsemen, and until there are successive attacks on their cities, until the horses trample their lands to the end and trample their pastures and grazing grounds. The commentator says that 'da'q' means trampling, and the meaning of this sentence is that the horses trample their lands with their hooves, and 'nawahir radham' means those lands that are opposite each other. If the Arabs say 'manazil bani fulan tatanahar,' its meaning is that the houses of such and such tribe are opposite each other.
