Sermon Sermon : 171

Sermon (171): Who is Deserving of the Caliphate?

He (the Prophet) was the trustee of Allah's revelations, the last of His Messengers, the bearer of glad tidings of His mercy, and the warner of His punishment. O people! The most worthy of this caliphate among all people is the one who has the greatest power and competence to maintain its order and knows the most about Allah's commands regarding it. If, then, a seditious person stirs up trouble, he is to be called to repentance and return; if he refuses, fight is to be made with him. By my life! If the establishment of the caliphate were to depend on the gathering of the whole nation, it would never be possible. Rather, the architects have made it so that even those absent at the time of the pledge are bound by its result, and the present cannot deviate from it nor does the absent have the right to select another. Beware! I will surely fight against two people: one who lays claim to that which does not belong to him, and another who fails to keep his covenant. Part of this sermon: O servants of Allah! I enjoin upon you piety and God-consciousness, for of all the things people urge upon each other, piety is the best and its outcome is greater and more superior than all else with Allah. The doors of war have opened between you and other People of the Qibla, and only one with foresight, patience in adversity, and a keen knowledge of the places of truth will raise its banner. Do what you are commanded and refrain from what you are forbidden. Do not rush in any matter until you have given it full consideration. In those matters you dislike, we fear extraordinary upsets. Behold, the world, which you desire and toward which you hasten in longing and hope, sometimes makes you angry and sometimes delights you. It is not your real home, nor the place for which you were created, nor the destination to which you have been invited. Know that it is not an abode that will remain for you, nor will you dwell therein forever. If it has deceived you with its allure, it has also frightened you with its evils. So do not let its frightful warnings deceive you, nor be tempted by the desires it creates. Move toward the house (the Hereafter) you are called to, and turn your hearts away from this world. Let no one among you, if deprived of something of this world, sit wailing like a slave-girl. Seek the completion of Allah's favors through patience in obeying Him and protecting what He has asked you to protect in His Book. If you safeguard the fundamentals of religion, then loss of any worldly thing cannot harm you, and after the destruction of your religion, nothing of the world you have saved will benefit you. May Allah turn our hearts and yours to the truth and grant us patience.
