Sermon (62): On the Decline of the World
O servants of Allah! Fear Allah and provide a store of your deeds before death, and buy everlasting things by giving up perishable things of the world. Prepare for the journey, for you are being taken away rapidly, and prepare for death, for it is hovering over your heads. You should be such people that when called, they wake up, and having realized that the world is not their home, they exchange it (for the hereafter). For Allah has not created you in vain, nor has He left you unrestrained. Death is blocking your path. Upon its arrival, there is either Paradise or Hell for you. That duration of life which every passing moment is reducing and every hour is demolishing its structure, should be considered very little. And that traveler who is being pulled by every new day and every new night (continuously), his reaching the destination should be considered soon. And that traveler whose journey faces the question of eternal success or failure needs the best provision. Therefore, while living in this world, take from it such provision for the hereafter by which you can save yourselves tomorrow. Its form is that the servant fears his Allah, does good to his soul (before death), repents, and controls his desires. Since death is hidden from his sight, hopes are deceptive, and Satan has cast his shadow over him, who presents sins as truth before him so that he keeps delaying. Until death suddenly falls upon him in a state of heedlessness and ignorance. Alas! That the duration of life of this heedless and ignorant one itself becomes a proof against him, and the end of his life becomes misfortune. We ask Allah, the Glorified, to make us and you such that (worldly) blessings cannot make us rebellious and disobedient, and we do not become helpless and incapable of obeying the Lord at any stage, and after death we do not have to bear shame, nor suffer grief and sorrow.
