Sermon (67): In Criticism of His Companions
How long will I continue to show such gentleness and leniency with you, like that shown to those camels whose humps have become hollow from inside, and like those torn old clothes that when sewn from one side, tear from the other side. Whenever any vanguard unit from the Syrians hovers over you, you all close the doors (of your houses) and crouch inside like a mongoose in its hole and a badger in its burrow. One who has such helpers as you is bound to be humiliated, and one upon whom you are thrown (like an arrow) is as if an arrow has been thrown at him whose notch is broken and whose tip is broken. By Allah, in the courtyards (of houses) you appear in large numbers, but under the banners, only a few. I know well what can reform you and what can remove your deviation. But I do not want to reform you by corrupting my own soul. May Allah disgrace your faces and make you unfortunate. As much as you are acquainted with falsehood, you are not acquainted with truth, and as much as you erase truth, falsehood is not suppressed from you.
