Sermon (59): Prophecy Regarding the Defeat of the Kharijites
When he expressed the intention to fight the Kharijites, he was told that they had crossed the bridge of the Nahrawan canal and gone over there. He said: The place of their fall is on this side of the water. By Allah! Not even ten of them will escape, and not even ten of you will be killed.
Sayyid Razi says that in this sermon, 'nutfah' refers to the water of the river (Euphrates), and this is the best metaphor for water, even if the water is abundant. When the Kharijites were killed, he was told that all of them had been killed. He said: Not at all. They are still present in the loins of men and the wombs of women. Whenever a leader appears among them, he will be cut down. Until their last remnants become thieves and bandits. Regarding these same Kharijites, he said: Do not kill the Kharijites after me, for whoever seeks the truth in seeking it will also find it. Sayyid Razi says this refers to Muawiyah and his companions.
