Sermon (91): On Uprooting the Khawarij and the Comprehensiveness of His Knowledge

O people! I have blinded the eyes of sedition and evil. And when its darknesses were rising and falling (like waves), and (like mad dogs) its madness was at its peak, no one other than me had the courage to advance toward it. Now (is the opportunity) ask me whatever you want, before you do not find me. By that Being in whose grasp is my soul! Whatever you ask me about from now until the Day of Resurrection, I will tell you. And if you inquire about a group that guided some and misled others, I will tell you about its caller and the one who pulls it forward and pushes it from behind, and the destination of its mounts and the place where its (loaded) saddles will descend. And who among them will be killed, and who will die (their natural death). And when I am gone and unpleasant things and severe hardships come, then (you will see) many questioners will lower their heads in distress, and those who tell will become helpless and defeated. This will be at a time when wars will break upon you with force, and their hardships will become apparent. And the world will become so narrow for you that you will think the days of calamities are increasing. Until Allah the Exalted gives victory and success to your remaining people. This is the nature of seditions: when they come, they cast you into darkness so that (the distinction between) truth and falsehood is not clear to you, and when they turn back, they leave you alert. When they come, they are not recognized; when they retreat, they are recognized. They circle like winds, placing some cities under their attack while others remain safe. In my view, the most fearsome sedition for you is that of Banu Umayyah, which neither sees anything itself nor makes anything visible. Its afflictions are specific to certain individuals. Whoever keeps truth before his eyes in it will face calamities, and whoever closes his eyes will be safe from them. By Allah! After me, you will find Banu Umayyah to be the worst rulers for yourselves. They are like that old and rebellious she-camel that bites with its mouth, kicks its legs here and there, strikes the milker with its legs, and refuses to give milk. They will continue to destroy you until they leave only that which is beneficial to them or (at least) not harmful to them. And their calamity will continue to surround you in such a way that seeking justice from them will become as difficult as a slave seeking from his master and a disciple seeking from his spiritual guide. Their sedition will come to you in such a terrifying form that fear will arise, and it will bring with it various states of the Age of Ignorance. Neither will there be a minaret of guidance erected in it, nor will any sign showing the path be visible. We (the Ahl al-Bayt of the Messenger, peace be upon him) will be safe from these seditions (from their sin), and we will have no part in calling people to them. Then a day will come when Allah will separate these seditions through that person who will make them taste humiliation, drive them with severity, make them drink the bitter cup (of death), place the sword before them, and make fear cling to them, just as a hide is separated from a slaughtered animal. At that time, Quraysh will wish, in exchange for dinars and dirhams, that they could see me just for the duration it takes to slaughter a camel, so that I might accept that thing for which they are not ready to give even a part today despite being asked.
