Sermon (80): On the Way of the World with the People of the World

What can I say about the state of this abode of the world, whose beginning is sorrow and whose end is annihilation? In its lawful there is accounting, and in its forbidden there is punishment and chastisement. Here, if one is wealthy, he faces trials, and if one is poor, he faces grief and sorrow. Whoever is engaged in striving for the world, his worldly desires keep increasing. And whoever lifts his hands from striving, the world itself becomes favorable to him. Whoever looks at the world as a mirror for taking lessons, it makes his eyes bright and seeing, and whoever only looks at the world, it makes him blind. (Sayyid Razi says that if a thoughtful person contemplates this statement of His Eminence 'man absara biha absarathu' - whoever looks at it for taking lessons - he will find in it strange meanings and deep concepts that cannot be fully grasped, especially with this phrase 'wa man al-basar ilayha a'mat' - and whoever only looks at the world, it takes away the light of his eyes. If one reflects, he will clearly feel the difference between 'absara biha' and 'al-basar ilayha' and will be amazed).
