Letter (28): Names of Muawiyah

This is one of the best letters of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). Your letter has reached you. You have mentioned in it that Allah has chosen Muhammad (peace be upon him) for His religion and has given him strength and power through his companions who supported him. Time has kept a veil over your wonders, which are now appearing as if you are informing us of the favors that have been bestowed upon us and the blessings that have been bestowed upon us through our Messenger. Thus, you have become like a person carrying dates to the Hijra or inviting his teacher to a competition in javelin throwing. You have expressed the idea that the best in Islam are so-and-so and so-and-so (Abu Bakr and Umar). You have said something that if it is true, you have nothing to do with it, and if it is false, it will not harm you. And where are you and where is this discussion about who is superior and who is not superior and who is not superior, and who is not superior? Who is the ruler and who is the subject? How can the freed people and their sons have the right to distinguish between the first and the last refugees, to determine their ranks and to identify their classes? How inappropriate it is that the arrows of the game of chance start to sound and they sit to decide in a matter that is against them. After all, it has to be decided. O man, why don't you stop at your limit, looking at the color of your feet and understanding your own weakness, and why don't you step back and stop right where the decision of fate has turned you back. After all, what do you have to do with the defeat of a defeated person and the victory of a conqueror? You should feel that you are flailing your hands and feet in amazement and confusion and are deviated from the right path. After all, you do not see. And what I am saying is not to inform you, but to mention the blessings of Allah. A group of the refugees and the helpers were martyred in the way of Allah. There is a degree of excellence for everyone. But when a martyr among us drank the cup of martyrdom, he was called Sayyid al-Shuhada, and the Prophet only gave him this distinction: seventy Takbirs were recited in his funeral prayer. Don't you see that many people's hands were cut off in the way of God, and a certain degree of excellence was assigned to each one? But when the same thing happened to our man as happened to others, he was called Al-Tayar fi al-Jannah (the one who flies in Paradise) and Dhul-Janahin (the one with two wings). And if God Almighty had not prevented him from being criticized, the narrator would have also narrated those virtues of his own that the hearts of the believers acknowledge and the ears of the listeners do not want to separate from him. Why mention those whose arrows miss the mark? We are the ones who grow up receiving blessings directly from God, and others are the beneficiaries of our favors. We have passed on our honor from generation to generation. And despite their ancient superiority over your family, they did not care about you, and they kept in touch with you, and they treated you as equals, although you were not in that position. How could you be, when among us is a prophet and among you is a liar? Among us is the lion of Allah and among you is the lion of the companions. Among us are two leaders of the youth of Paradise and among you are the children of Hell. Among us are the leaders of the women of the world. And among you, the carrying of firewood and many other things that reflect our and your lowliness. Therefore, the period after the advent of Islam is also the one that has a reputation and our distinction from the period of ignorance is undeniable and what remains after that, the Book of Allah tells us in comprehensive words. The Divine statement is: Those who are related to each other have more rights over each other. In another place, it is said: Abraham (peace be upon him) had more rights over those who followed him and this Prophet and those who believed and Allah is the Protector of the believers. So we have superiority over others because of our relationship and our right is also superior because of our obedience and on the day of Saqifa when the Muhajirin presented the relationship of the Messenger as an argument and succeeded against the Ansar, so if their success was due to their relationship then this caliphate is our right and not theirs and if there is some other criterion of entitlement then the claim of the Ansar remains in its place and you have shown that you have envied all the caliphs. And raised rebellions against them. If that is the case, what have I done to you that I should apologize to you (according to the poet) "This is a mistake that does not affect you in any way" And you have written that why was I dragged for allegiance like a camel that has been pulled after it has set off? By the Creator! When you dismounted, you were about to do evil, so you started praising it. You wanted to humiliate me, but you yourself were humiliated. What is the defect in a Muslim man that he is oppressed when he neither doubts his religion nor is his belief in it shaken? And although this argument of mine is related to others, it is related to you as much as was appropriate here. Then you have mentioned the case of me and Uthman, so you have the right to be answered because you are related to them. Well then (the truth) Tell me, which of us was more hostile to them and more ardent in his killing, the one who offered his help and they refused him, or the one from whom he sought help and he was refused, and prepared for them the means of death until the death of their destiny overtook them. By God! (He is never considered the greatest enemy.) Allah knows best those who prevent others from fighting and say to their brothers, "Come to us," and they themselves remain nominally at the time of fighting. Indeed, I am not ready to apologize for what I disliked some of their innovations. If my fault is that I used to show them the right path and guide them, then often uncommitted sins become the target of blame and sometimes the one who advises has to become the center of suspicion. .As far as I can tell, I only wanted the situation to be improved and if I want to get success, I can only rely on Allah. I trust in Him and I rely on Him. You have written to me that "All you have for me and my companions is the sword." By saying this, you even made the Rots laugh. Tell me when you saw the children of Abdul Muttalib turning their backs on the enemy, and when you saw them being afraid of swords.(If this is the intention, then, as the poet says,) Wait a little while so that the pregnancy reaches the battlefield. Soon the one you are seeking will come out in search of you, and the one you think is far away will come close. I am coming towards you flying with an army of the Muhajirin, Ansar, and the Tabi'in who follow in their footsteps in a good way. Such an army will be in immense crowd and dust will spread. They will be wearing the shroud of death. Meeting with God will be more beloved to them than any meeting. With them will be the descendants of the martyrs of Badr and the Hashemite swords, whose sharp edges you have seen in your maternal uncles, brothers, grandfathers, and relatives. They are still not far from the oppressors.
