Sermon (103): On Praising and Describing the Prophet
Finally, Allah sent Muhammad (peace be upon him) while he was a witness, a bearer of glad tidings, and a warner. Who was the best of creation in childhood and the noblest of the universe when mature, and the purest among the pure in terms of character, and the most continuous in giving among those who are like clouds in generosity and giving. The world became sweet and pleasant in its pleasures at that time, and at that time you became able to drink from its udders when before that its reins were loose and its bridle was shaking (i.e., it had no rider and caretaker who would hold its reins and tighten its bridle). For some nations, the forbidden became like a berry (sweet and tasty) whose branches are bent with fruits. And the lawful became distant and strange for them. By Allah! This world is with you in the form of a long shadow for a fixed time. But at that time, the earth was in your control without any restriction. Your hands were open in it, and the leaders' hands were bound. Your swords were drawn against them, and their swords were rejected. You should know that every blood has someone to take revenge, and every right has someone to claim it, like that ruler who judges about his own right, and that is Allah, whom He seeks, cannot make Him helpless. And whoever tries to flee cannot escape from His hands. O Banu Umayyah! I swear by Allah that soon you will see your (world and its) wealth in the hands of others and in the houses of enemies. The eye that sees most is that eye whose sight penetrates into good deeds, and the ear that hears most is that ear which hears words of advice and accepts them. O people! Light your lamps from the flame of the lamp of guidance of the practicing preacher, and fill water from that pure and clear spring, which has been tainted with (the mixtures of) doubts and turbidity. O servants of Allah! Do not turn to your ignorances, and do not become subservient to your desires. For the one who descends to the destination of desires is like someone standing on the edge of a flood-stricken wall that wants to fall. He carries a bundle of destruction on his back, sometimes on this shoulder, sometimes on that shoulder. In the form of those opinions that he keeps changing, and he wants to stick (some proof) to it, but which is not sticking, and he wants to bring it close (to minds), which is not capable of being close. Fear Allah lest you sit before that person with your complaints who will not remove the distress of your complaints (according to your desires), nor will he break the firm and strong commands of the Shariah. The duty of the Imam is only this: to perform the work that has been entrusted to him from his Lord, and that is to deliver words of advice and counsel to them, to make full effort in explaining, to keep the Sunnah alive, and to apply the prescribed punishment on those on whom it should be applied, and to deliver (usurped) shares to their original owners. You should advance toward knowledge before its (green) vegetation dries up, and before your own self's occupations become obstacles in learning from the people of knowledge. Prevent others from evils and also refrain yourselves. For you are commanded to refrain from evils first, and to prevent others is after that.
