Sermon (120): When the Khawarij Insisted on Not Accepting Arbitration, He Said

When the Khawarij insisted on not accepting arbitration, the Imam went to their camp and said to them: Were all of you present with us at Siffin? They said: Some of us were, and some were not. Then the Imam said: Then you should separate into two groups. One that was present at Siffin, and one that was not present there, so that I may speak with each what is appropriate for them. And he called out to the people: Now do not (talk among yourselves), and listen to my words in silence and pay attention with your hearts, and whoever we ask for testimony, let him testify according to his knowledge (as it is). Then the Imam had a long conversation with those people. Among it, he said: When those people raised the Quran (on spears) with trickery and deceit and fraud, did you not say: They are our brothers and those who accepted (Islam's) call with us. Now they want us to stop fighting, and they have stopped on Allah the Exalted's book (for reconciliation). The correct opinion is that their word should be accepted and they should be freed. So I had said to you that outside this thing is faith and inside it is enmity and animosity. Its beginning is compassion and kindness, and its result is regret and remorse. So you should remain on your position and remain firm on your path. And clench your teeth for jihad, and do not pay attention to the one who calls. If his voice is answered, he will mislead, and if he is left alone, he will remain degraded. (But) when the matter of arbitration was completed, I was seeing you that you were the ones giving satisfaction to it. By Allah, if I had refused it, no obligation would have been incumbent on me regarding it, nor would Allah have imposed its (abandonment's) sin on me. And I swear by Allah, if I advanced toward it, even then I am the one who is right, and should be followed, and the Book of Allah is with me, and since I have been with it, I have not separated from it. We were with the Messenger (in battles), and those who were killed were those who were each other's fathers, sons, brothers, and relatives. But in every calamity and hardship, our faith increased, and following truth and obedience to religion increased, and patience on the pains of wounds increased. But now we have to fight those people who are called our brothers according to Islam, because (due to them) misguidance, crookedness, doubts, and wrong interpretations have entered into it. So when we see any such means through which (possibly) Allah may remove our troubles, and through which, advancing toward it, we may come closer to each other from the remaining (attachment) between us, we will remain desirous of it, and will stop our hands from any other way that is against it.
