Sermon (191): Attributes of the pious and correcting the misunderstanding of Ibn-e-Kawa
It has been narrated that one of the Companions of Ameerul Momineen (peace be upon him) who was called Hammam and who was a very pious person, asked the Prophet, O Ameerul Momineen, to describe the condition of those who avoid me in such a way that their image starts moving in my eyes.. Hazrat hesitated to answer. Then he said: O Humam, fear Allah and do good deeds, because Allah is with those who are pious and have good character.. Hammam was not satisfied with your answer and gave you an oath (to give a further statement), upon which Hazrat praised God and sent blessings upon the Prophet and said: When Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala created the creatures, He placed them in His presence, free from their obedience and harmless from their sins, because He is not harmed by the sin of a sinner, nor benefited by the obedience of a obedient one. arrives. He has distributed the goods of life among them and placed each one in his proper place in the world.. Therefore, virtue is for those who are pious, because their speech is stilted, their dress is modest, and their behavior is weak and humble.. They have closed their eyes from the forbidden things of Allah and have turned their attention to beneficial knowledge.. Had it not been for the period (of fixed life) that Allah has written for them, their souls would not have stayed in their bodies even for a glance due to their desire for reward and fear of punishment.. The greatness of the creator is sitting in their hearts. Because everything other than that is humiliating in their eyes. They have the same belief in heaven as in what they see with their eyes, so it is as if they are overwhelmed with the blessings of heaven at the same time, and they have the same belief in hell as if they are seeing it, so they feel as if the punishment there is in front of their eyes, their hearts are sad, treasured, and people are safe from their evil and harm.. Their bodies are lean, needy and free from selfish desires. He endured the hearts (of sufferings) for a short time, as a result of which he obtained eternal comfort. This is a profitable trade that Allah prepared for them. The world wanted them but they did not want the world.. When the night falls, they stand on their feet and recite the verses of the Qur'an continuously, by which they refresh their hearts and look for a remedy for their illness.. When they look at a verse in which Paradise is encouraged, they lean towards it in their greed, and their hearts yearn for it, and they think that the scene is before their eyes. The sound of the flames and the shouts from there are reaching their ears, they bend their backs (in bowing) and (in prostration) their foreheads, palms, knees and feet (toes) are placed on the ground and they pray to Allah for salvation.. During the day, he looks like a wise scholar, virtuous and pious. Fear has left them as weak as arrows. On seeing them, the viewer thinks they are sick, although they do not have any disease, and when they listen to their words, they say that their minds are insane (not so), but they are facing another danger.. They are not satisfied with the small amount of their deeds and do not think much of them.. O God, don't hold me to their words and make me better than those who have this good opinion about me and forgive my sins that they don't know about.. The sign of one of them is that you will see stability in his religion, far-sightedness with gentleness and cheerfulness, certainty and steadfastness in faith, wisdom with tolerance, moderation in happiness, humility in worship, humility in poverty and hunger, patience in adversity, halal view in seeking sustenance, abundance in guidance, and hatred and detachment from greed.. He is afraid despite doing good deeds. If it is evening, then it is thanks to Allah before it, and if it is morning, then its purpose is God. He spends the night in fear and wakes up happy in the morning. The danger is that the night does not pass in neglect and the happiness of the wealth of grace and mercy that has been bestowed on him. If his soul refuses to bear an unpleasant situation, then he does not fulfill his arbitrary desire, his eyes are filled with eternal blessings and he is aloof from the things of death.. He has combined humility in knowledge and action in speech.. When the remembrance of God is seen among those who are heedless of God, whenever it is written among those who remember, because his heart is not heedless, and when he is among those who remember, then it is obvious that he is not counted among the negligent. The advantages are significant. Virtues emerge. He is humble and dignified in the shocks of adversity, patient in hardships and grateful in happy times, he does not do wrong against him even if he is an enemy, and he does not commit any sin even for the sake of him who is a friend.. He himself confesses before any witness is required against him. He does not waste the trust nor forgets what he has been reminded of. He does not call others by bad names, nor does he harm his neighbors, nor is he happy at the sufferings of others, nor does he enter into the border of falsehood, nor does he step out from the path of truth.. If he is silent, his heart is not quenched by his silence, and if he laughs, his voice is not raised.. If he is wronged, he bears it so that Allah will avenge him. His soul is afflicted by him and others are at peace with him. He has kept his soul in trouble for the sake of the Hereafter, and God's people in relief from his own self (the evil) of those whom he keeps away from, it is for the sake of asceticism and purity, and those whom he draws close to, it is out of kindness and compassion, and his distance is not due to pride and arrogance, nor is his association due to any deceit or malice.. According to the narrator, hearing these words, Hammam was filled with anger and his soul died in that world.. Amirul Momineen ﷷ said, By God, this was the danger I had regarding him. Then he said that effective advice has the same effect on the nature of the advised. At that time, one of the speakers said, O Ameerul Momineen, peace be upon him! Then what is the matter that you yourself do not have such an effect? Hazrat said that without a doubt, a time is fixed for death that it cannot go beyond and there is a reason for it that can never be avoided.. From such (nonsensical) speech that Satan has released on your tongue. Stop and don't say such a thing again.
