Sermon (29): To Those Who Make Excuses at the Time of War

O people whose bodies are together but whose desires are separate! Your words soften even hard stones, but your actions are such that they give enemies the opportunity to sharpen their teeth against you. In your gatherings you keep saying you will do this and that, but when war breaks out, you begin to seek refuge from it. The call of one who calls you for help goes unheeded, and the heart of one who has to deal with people like you is always troubled. These are false excuses and desires to delay war with me, like a destitute debtor trying to put off his creditor. A base person cannot prevent base transgressions, and truth is not obtained without effort. After this house, what other house will you protect? And after me, with which Imam will you do jihad? By Allah, there is no doubt that whoever you have deceived is indeed deceived, and whoever meets people like you receives an arrow that is empty, and whoever throws you (like arrows) at enemies has thrown an arrow whose feathers have fallen off and whose tip is broken. By Allah, my condition now is such that I cannot confirm any of your words, I have no hope left for your help, and I cannot threaten the enemy with war because of you. What has happened to you? What is your ailment and what is its cure? The people of this group (the people of Syria) are also men with the same form and appearance as you. Will it remain only words? Without knowledge and only heedlessness and intoxication. Without piety and God-consciousness, it is only greed for elevation, but completely unjustified.
