Sermon (56): On Your Patience in the Battlefield

We (Muslims) used to kill our fathers, sons, brothers, and uncles while being with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). This increased our faith. Obedience and following the path of truth increased, and patience in the face of the burning of affliction and pain increased, and efforts to wage jihad against enemies increased. (The form of jihad was that) one person from among us and a soldier from the enemy's army would clash with each other like men and pounce on each other to take life, to see who would give his opponent the cup of death. Sometimes we would win, and sometimes our enemy would. So when the Lord of knowledge saw the truth of our (intentions), He disgraced and humiliated our enemies, and gave us victory and support, until Islam leaned back and settled in its place, and remained established at its destination. By Allah! If we had done as you do, the pillar of religion would never have been established, nor would the trunk of faith have borne fruit. By Allah! You will milk blood instead of milk for what you have done. And in the end, you will have to bear shame and disgrace.
