Sermon (65): After Hearing About the Proceedings of Saqifah Bani Sa'idah
After the demise of the Prophet (peace be upon him), when the news of Saqifah Bani Sa'idah reached the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), he asked what the Ansar were saying. People said they were saying that one leader should be from among us and one from among you. The Imam (peace be upon him) said: 'Why did you not present this argument that the Messenger of Allah had made a will that whoever among the Ansar is good, good treatment should be shown to him, and whoever is bad, forgiveness should be shown to him?' People said: What proof is there against them in this? He said: If rulership and leadership were for them, then why would others be given a will regarding them? Then the Imam asked: What did the Quraysh say? People said: They argued for their right based on being from the tree of the Messenger. So the Imam (peace be upon him) said: They argued from the tree being one, but they destroyed and wasted its fruits.
