Sermon (97): On Abandoning the World

We praise Allah for what has passed, and we seek help from Him against what is to come. Just as we ask Him for the health of bodies, so we are seekers of the safety of religion and faith. O servants of Allah! I advise you to abandon this world, which will abandon you, even though you do not like to abandon it, and which will make your bodies old and decayed, even though you try to keep them fresh. The example of you and this world is like some travelers who walk on a path and immediately reach their destination, and intend a high sign and immediately reach there. How short is the interval of that (horse rider) who rides it to the ultimate destination, and what is the survival of that person for whom there is such a day that he cannot advance beyond it. And a fast-paced seeker in the world is calling it, until it leaves this world. Do not desire the honor of the world and pride and elevation in it, and do not be happy with its adornments and blessings, and do not cry out impatiently at its hardships and difficulties. For its honor and pride are both going to be erased, and its adornments and blessings are going to vanish, and its hardships and difficulties will eventually end. The result of every period of it is termination, and the end of every living being is annihilation. Is there not sufficient warning material for you in the events of past people, and is there not lesson and insight for you if you think? Do you not see the people who have passed that they do not return, and those who remain after them also do not remain alive? You do not look at the people of the world who pass morning and evening in various states. Somewhere there is a corpse over which people are weeping, and somewhere someone is being consoled. Someone is helpless and bedridden, afflicted with illness, and someone is visiting. Somewhere someone has breathed his last. Someone is seeking the world, and death is seeking him, and someone is in negligence, but (death) is not negligent of him. Those who remain are walking on the footsteps of those who have passed. I warn you that at the time of committing evil deeds, remember death, which erases all pleasures and makes all carnal pleasures bitter. Continue to seek help from Him for fulfilling Allah's obligatory rights and for being grateful for His countless blessings and innumerable favors.
