Sermon (160): The Reasons for Keeping Him (peace be upon him) Away from Caliphate
One of the Imam's companions asked: What is the reason that people kept you away from the position, although you were more deserving of it? So he said: O brother of Banu Asad! You are very narrow-minded and have gone astray. (Despite this) since we have consideration for your relationship and you also have the right to ask, so now that you have asked, then know that (those people's) settling on this position by their own choice, despite us being higher in lineage and having a strong relationship of kinship with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), was their selfishness, in which some people's selves died for it, and some people's selves did not even care for it. The judge is Allah, and the return is to Him on the Day of Resurrection. (After this, the Imam recited this verse as an example) 'Leave the mention of that plunder whose noise was raised on all sides.' Now look at this calamity that came because of Abu Sufyan's son. Time has made me laugh after making me cry on (it), and by Allah! There is no wonder at the (current method of) time. Wonder is at that calamity that has exceeded the limit of wonder, and that has increased misguidances. Some people wanted to extinguish the light of Allah's bright lamp and were intent on closing its spring (of guidance's fountain), and mixed poisonous sips between me and themselves. If the difficulties of this trial are removed from between us and them, I will take them on the path of pure truth, and if another situation occurs, then do not let your breath be cut while feeling regret and sorrow for them. For Allah knows well what these people are doing.
