Sermon Sermon : 42

Sermon (42): On Long Hopes

O people! I fear two things most for you: following desires and the spread of hopes. Following desires is what prevents from truth, and the spread of hopes makes one forget the hereafter. You should know that the world is passing away quickly and nothing remains of it, except as much as when someone empties a vessel, some moisture remains in it. And the hereafter is coming with its face turned this way. The world and the hereafter each have their own people. So be children of the hereafter, and do not be children of the world, for every child will be attached to its mother on the Day of Resurrection. Today is the day of action and not of reckoning, and tomorrow will be the day of reckoning when action will not be possible. The commentator says that 'al-hudha' means 'swift-moving,' and some have narrated 'al-judha' (based on this narration, the meaning would be that the pleasures of the world will soon end).
