Sermon (84): On Preparing for the Hereafter
He knows the intentions of hearts and the secrets within. He encompasses everything and overshadows every being, and His power runs over everything. Whoever among you has something to do should do it before death intervenes, in the days of respite before busyness, in the moments of leisure before preoccupation, and in the time of breathing before the throat is choked. Let him prepare provisions for himself and for reaching his destination, and provide supplies from this passageway for the abode of residence. O people! Fear Allah regarding those things whose protection He has asked from you in His book and the rights He has placed upon you. For Allah, the Glorified, did not create you in vain, nor did He leave you free in ignorance and misguidance. He has prescribed for you the good and bad of what to do and not do, and taught you through the Prophet. He has written your lifespans, and sent you a book in which everything is clearly explained. He kept His Prophet alive among you for a long time, until He completed for His Prophet and for you the religion that He likes in His revealed book, and conveyed to you through his tongue His liked and disliked actions, and His commands and prohibitions. He placed His proofs before you, established His argument upon you, and warned you beforehand. He warned you of severe punishment to come. So now make up in the remaining days of your life, and make your souls bear the hardships of these days. For these days are very few compared to those days that passed in your negligence and were spent in turning away from admonition and advice. Do not be lenient with your souls even in permissible things, lest this leniency put you on the path of wrongdoers. And do not take matters lightly even in disliked things, lest this softness and carelessness push you toward sin. O servants of Allah! Among people, the one who is most well-wishing to his own soul is the one who is most obedient and submissive to his Allah, and the one who most deceives his own soul is the one who is most sinful toward his Allah. The truly deceived is the one who deceived his own soul and caused it harm. The enviable one is he whose religion remained safe, the fortunate is he who acquired advice and admonition from others, and the unfortunate is he who fell into the cycle of desires and passions. Remember! Even a little hypocrisy is polytheism, and the companionship of the lustful is the station of forgetfulness of faith and the place of Satan's help. Avoid falsehood, for it is separate from faith. Truthful speech is at the heights of salvation and greatness, and the liar is at the edge of lowliness and humiliation. Do not envy each other, for envy consumes faith just as fire consumes wood. Do not harbor hatred and enmity, for it strips away good deeds. Understand that desires cast a veil over the minds' understanding and over remembrance of Allah. Reject hopes, for they are deceptions, and the one who ties hopes is deceived.
